Clearly people are making a big deal out of JFAD also for the people involved, Gaga is coming from years of acclaim and Joaquin also build the reputation of highbrow Oscar winning actor, Philips from Hangover director to Oscar nominated one.. People wanted the huge stars to fail.

Nobody is going to drag Paul Mescal if the movie flops because he's a nobody..

The Disney hate parade would continue if Mufasa flops, and it would be another catastrophe for Ridley Scott if Gladiator 2 fails. Paul Mescal is fast becoming a major name in acting, with an Academy Award nom and 2 BAFTA noms already, plus a big online following that helps him generate buzz. It's not the same as JFAD, but both of those movies failing would have serious blowback from a commercial stand point. Neither will bomb critically the way JFAD did though.

Also Phoenix just had an even bigger flop with Napoleon... so he's not quite as bulletproof in his fall from grace.
