No doubt they expected JFAD to be a bigger cultural moment-- but it's still much better than if she had released it earlier this year when no one was thinking about Gaga nor would have given her new music much attention. Why rewrite an incredible period in Gaga’s career that took her from the lows of ARTPOP to her first #1 US song in 8 years, many Grammys, Golden Globe, BAFTA, CC, and Oscar? She’d have never landed ASIB, SBHTS, or the achievements since, without Joanne allowing her to pivot away from her last public era of bad press, performances with R Kelly, Swine at SXSW, etc. Her relevance in music would’ve rapidly declined KP-style had she waited 5 years for LG5. Joanne did what it needed even if LMs didn’t appreciate it then or now- an album and promo cycle that highlighted her talents and diversity as an artist.
