7/10 from NBP

THE GOOD - Another stellar performance from Joaquin Phoenix, this time more restrained. Lady Gaga matches his freak as a new version of Harleen "Lee" Quinzel. A much more mature and restrained story about identity than most would expect. Impressive technical elements, including cinematography, production design, costumes, makeup and hairstyling, and score.

THE BAD - The musical numbers become overindulgent and not always necessary. Die-hard fans of the first film may have some reservations about this story.

THE OSCAR PROSPECTS - Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Cinematography, Best Costume Design, Best Makeup and Hairstyling, Best Production Design, Best Original Score & Best Sound

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS CONFIRMED MOST LIKELY

Soo no Original Song as expected. Maybe Gaga helped with the Score? Let me dream

Popster for Sale 44,328

Empire 4/5

The unorthodox, unvarnished delivery of the songs from Phoenix and Gaga sells so much that a dialogue-light script does not — Burt Bacharach's 'Close To You' has rarely been performed as chillingly — yet where the first film was relentlessly oppressive and bleak, there is an oddly hopeful tone here. Arthur's performance of 'For Once In My Life', in particular, is a curious blend of quiet menace and truly heartfelt passion.
