Vice (2018)

Metacritic: 61 (was <60 at that time)

Rotten Tomatoes: 64%

CinemaScore: C+ *AUDIENCE RECEPTION BOMB:rip:*

Boxoffice:  76M against a 60M budget *BOXOFFICE BOMB:rip:*

Award Season performance:

  • Spoiler
    • Golden Globes: 6 noms (most of any movies of that year:rip:), won Best Actor - Musical or Comedy
    • Critics Choice: 9 noms, won Best Actor
    • BAFTA: 6 noms, won Editing
    • SAG: 2 noms
    • Oscars: 8 noms (tied with A Star Is Born:rip:), incluing Picture, Diretor, and THREE acting awards!

Bohemian Rhapsody (2018)

Metacritic: 49 (lol) *LOWEST CONTENDER THAT YEAR:rip:*

Rotten Tomatoes: 60%

CinemaScore: A

Boxoffice:  910M against a 55M budget *GLOBAL SENSATIONAL SMASH*

Award Season performance:

  • Spoiler
    • Golden Globes: 2 noms, won Best Actor - Drama, Best Picture - Drama (beating ASIB:rip:)
    • Critics Choice: 3 noms
    • BAFTA: 7 noms, won Best Actor
    • SAG: 2 noms, won Best Actor
    • Oscars: 5 noms, won Actor, Editing, Sound Editing, Sound Mixing, most wins of that year:rip:

My point is, it's not done until it's done. The film festival premier, the critics review, the boxoffice, the audience reception, the precussors......Every element could be independent of each other and anything is possible. Just hope for the best and prepare for the worst.

Exactly. It all depends on how the studio wants to promote the movie. Anyone in marketing will know that these things are pure politics. You can package it any way you want.

They're promoting it as *totally not* a musical (it's a musical) with Lady Gaga as a co-lead (she's supporting) :icant:

I think, 8/10 are based on merits and 2/10 are based on aggressive campaigning regardless the reviews/boxscores
