I mean the song is the most self focused single she could have picked while people were done with her persona People followed Katy even more mainly because her lyrics / sounds were more easy to identify. Honestly let's be happy about how Applause did cause it could have done far worse. My very own opinion is that DWUW (solo) would have done far better as the lead single. If you look closely at her chart history as of late, you’d see that HMH for a solo Gaga song in the past 6 years was actually cute/better than average in majority of the world. the gays did too much on miss hand!
