I don’t disagree none of the singles from BE2 should be competitive / indicate a project deserving AOTY, etc., but her record - and maybe more importantly, her brother's - shows the support will be there. Yes, one would expect an artist to lose support if they don’t evolve, but one also wouldn’t expect a brand new artist, whose album (until then) had 1 top 10 hit, to be awarded 5 Grammys (incl all 4 GF). Billie’s debut wasn’t undeniable outside “bad guy.” ROTY+BNA (Ari taking BPVA, Lizzo SOTY, etc.) would’ve been great recognition; a sweep is something typically reserved for sophomore (+) Pop projects (Adele, Bruno). The fact that, in a year where other huge names were passed in order to have a more diverse lineup, she was 3/3 in terms of nominations for a leftover single that peaked at #8 was crazy... that it WON ROTY over the likes of DSN, Savage, and more shows she shouldn’t be underestimated.
