I mean artists were using those tricks before and the consumer were the one who suffered - it was common for you to announce a single as a CD disc or a vinyl (Gaga did this as well) and pair it up with a digital download and those sales counted for that sales week. Therefore when there were close battles for #1 artists would announce digital discs and they would get that #1. They had no incentive to actually make those CDs so some people waited for over a year or never got the disc/vinyl that they ordered. If you cancel your order, the sales won't be taken back aka artist does not lose their points. Now artists have to actually send their product to users for it to count. I mean you can keep the leaks to a minimum if you work hard enough - use NDA's. Also for the sale to count you just have to ship it that week - so you could ship on Thursday as it is the last day. So you could release the song Friday and only start pressing the discs on Friday to help minimise leaks and you probably would have time to ship them in time. BTS did this extremely well with Dynamite - they had a preorder even before the song was out and they could gauge the interest and probably started pressing them instantly on Friday and shipped them by the end of the week.
